Content marketing is the Trojan horse of advertising. You create content people want, and value, and because of that it slips right past the defenses that normally makes them ignore advertising. However, it isn’t as easy as it sounds. If you’re getting on the content marketing train, then you should keep the following marketing list in mind.

Tip #1: Don’t Focus on Making Sales

It seems backwards, as far as priorities go, but before your content marketing can be effective you need good content. Create something people like, and that they’ll want more of. Only after you’ve done that can you expect results.

Tip #2: Do Be Consistent

If you’re making content, consistency is key. You need to create a schedule, and keep that schedule, for example. You also need to produce the content you say you’re going to produce. Remember, someone who shows up and does a good job on the regular is better than a flighty genius.

Tip #3: Don’t Blast Calls To Action

A piece of content should have a single call to action in it. Whether it’s to follow you on Facebook, support your project on Patreon, or just to share this content with their friends, pick one action you want your audience to do. Multiple calls just dilute the power.

Tip #4: Do Promote Your Content

You could have the best content on the Internet, but if no one sees it then it may as well not exist. Post your links to social media, network with other creators to boost your signal, and make sure older content is linked in newer content.

Tip #5: Don’t Forget That It’s All About Your Audience

Don’t think of the audience as a means to an end. Before you can mobilize your audience, you have to win them over. So interact with them, listen to their feedback, and see what they want from you as a content creator. By being responsive, you’ll see significantly better results.
